The Old Town Hall Theatre (Opera House)
The Old Town Hall was built in 1874 with the first floor being used for Municipal and Police Offices, Council Meetings and Court Hearings. The second floor hosted minstrel shows, public meetings and social gatherings.
In March 1980, the Old Town Hall was designated a heritage structure under the Ontario Heritage Act. It remains the only building in the city with this honour despite many early structures remaining in use in the town. This designation protects the building against alteration or demolition. The first floor is home to the Public Library. The second floor was restored in 1988 into an Opera House.
This historic building is available for rentals.
Please call 519-773-4900 for detailed information on booking the Old Town Hall Theatre.
NEW! Cultural Economy Video
Recently the Town of Aylmer approached the Communications Technology class at East Elgin Secondary School to see if we could engage local youth in making a cultural video. The challenge was quickly accepted by Zach Grisenthwaite, a media student who has brought his vision for the project to life. With the help of other students, volunteers and local residents, The Town of Aylmer now has a video highlighting the arts, cultural and recreational opportunities in Aylmer.
Our creative economy is something to get excited about!
