Property Standards By-Law

The Town of Aylmer has a Property Standards By-law (By-law #55-97), which establishes minimum standards to which all properties in the Town of Aylmer must be maintained. It is the responsibility of all property owners to know the requirements of this local by-law. All inquires may be directed to the By-law Enforcement/Property Standards Office in the Planning and Municipal Services Department.

Commercial Vehicles in Residential Zones

The Town's Zoning By-law 57-99 prohibits the parking and or storage of a commercial vehicle within a residentially zoned area. Owners/operators of commercial vehicles i.e. highway tractor trailers (18 wheelers) should check with the town to ensure they are parking in an approved area. Only one Notice of Violation will be issued before the matter will be taken to court.

Boat and Trailer Storage in Residential Zones

The Town's Zoning By-law 57-99 restricts the storage of recreational vehicles in residential zones. Recreational vehicles are permitted to be parked and /or stored in a driveway of a residential property for more than seven (7) consecutive days from May 1 to September 30, after which time the vehicle must be stored in the rear yard or within a garage or other approved structure.

Building Permits

Every owner of property in the town of Aylmer who wishes to carry out any type of renovation, addition or new construction must contact the municipal office and speak to the Chief Building Official in the Planning and Municipal Services Department, to determine if a permit will be required for the works proposed. If it is determined that a permit is required, all of the necessary application forms will be provided by the town or individuals may utilize the Ministry forms found at http://www.obc.mah.gov.on.ca/Asset50.aspx

Dogs Licensing and Pit Bulls

The Town currently has an Animal Control By-law 9-96 which sets out the requirements for all residents of Aylmer regarding the keeping of any animal within the limits of the Town as well as the licensing requirements for dogs. Additionally the by-law defines a “Potentially Dangerous” and “Dangerous Dog”, and sets out the process whereby a dog can be declare potentially dangerous or dangerous. Additionally as of October 28th 2005 all owners of Pit Bulls must have the animal neutered and when off the owner’s property the dog must be muzzled and on a leash that does not exceed 1.8 metres.

Severances

If you require a Severance, the application is processed by the Elgin County Land Division Committee. A copy of the application for severance can be picked up at the Aylmer Town Hall, at the County of Elgin Offices at 450 Sunset Drive, St. Thomas, Ontario N5R 5V1 (519) 631-1460, and from the County website. http://www.elgin-county.on.ca/ElginCounty/Engineering/land.php
